vanilla custard recipe

This classic vanilla custard is rich and creamy, perfect as a dessert or a base for other sweets.

  • 2 cups whole milk Preferably fresh
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 5 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 pieces egg yolks Large eggs
  • 1 pinch salt

Preparation Steps

  • Heat milk and cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it just starts to simmer.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until pale and fluffy.
  • Gradually pour the hot milk mixture into the egg yolks, whisking constantly.
  • Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  • Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Let cool before serving.

Notes

This custard can be used as a base for other desserts like ice cream or bread pudding.
